30 killed, scores injured in Kano trailer accident

A fatal road accident in Kano State has claimed the lives of at least 30 people.

The crash involved a trailer travelling towards Gujungu, Jigawa State, and occurred at Kwanar Barde in Gezawa Local Government Area in the early hours of Sunday.

Preliminary reports attribute the cause to reckless driving.

Several other victims sustained serious injuries and are currently being treated in hospitals across the state.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, described the incident as devastating, calling the loss heartbreaking for the affected families and the wider community.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor expressed condolences and offered prayers for the deceased.

Beyond condolences, Governor Yusuf issued immediate directives.

He instructed the State Ministry of Health to ensure all victims in public hospitals receive free and adequate medical care.

He also directed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to conduct an urgent assessment and provide support to the affected families.

Warning against a repeat, the governor urged motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to obey traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving.

Medical and humanitarian teams have been deployed to assist the injured and provide relief, as authorities continue to respond to one of the deadliest road accidents in the area in recent times.
