2027: I’ll oppose anyone challenging Peter Obi, even if it’s myself — Datti Baba-Ahmed

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has declared that he will oppose anyone who dares to challenge Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race—even if that person is himself.

Speaking during an interview on Trust Television, Baba-Ahmed disclosed that although he personally harbours the ambition to run for president, he firmly believes no candidate is better suited for the position than the former Anambra State governor.

“If Peter Obi is contesting, I will oppose someone challenging him. Even if that someone is myself, I will oppose myself to challenge Peter Obi,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed expressed strong support for Obi’s return to the ballot in 2027, driven by what he described as an overriding ambition to end the wave of insecurity and violence plaguing the nation.

He expressed deep concern over recurring attacks on villages, particularly in states like Benue and Plateau, as well as the destruction of homes and properties by terrorists and bandits.

According to him, it is unacceptable for “bad people” to continue misruling the country. His primary motivation, he noted, is to ensure that Nigerians no longer wake up to distressing headlines about new dimensions of insecurity.

“I would like Peter Obi to win again in 2027. My main ambition is to stop the killings. I don’t want every time I read in the newspaper, there is a new dimension to the insecurity. There are some villages sacked, some place in Benue State, in Plateau State. I don’t like that kind of news, and I just cannot sit down and let bad people continue to misrule us,” Baba-Ahmed said.
