10 Dead as Military Jet Mistakenly Bombs Two Sokoto Villages
A military fighter jet mistakenly bombed two communities in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Wednesday, leaving at least 10 villagers dead and several others injured.
The Sokoto State Government confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic error during a military operation targeting criminal groups in the region. The governor’s press secretary, Abubakar Bawa, revealed that the villages of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa were affected.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu, who visited the communities, sympathized with the victims and their families, calling the incident “unfortunate.” He pledged a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence and prayed for the deceased.
Local government chairman Abubakar Mohammed Daftarana explained that the airstrike was aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group but inadvertently hit civilian areas. An assessment of casualties and damage is ongoing.
Military authorities, through Operation Fansan Yamma spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, refrained from confirming the alleged error but stressed the need for accurate information. He stated that all military operations are based on detailed intelligence to minimize civilian harm.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of civilians in military operations and the need for accountability in targeting processes.
